FINAL DESIGN APPROVAL: SD 240006.16
DESIGN TEAM LEADER: Cadet William Taggart
DESIGN TYPE: Strike Bomber
The Starchaser class Strike Bomber, designed in 2400, is based heavily on the successful Jaguar Class Heavy Assault Fighter. During its development, the design was enlarged by a number of meters and one of the two micro torpedo launchers were removed to house the extra weaponry. This weaponry comes in the form of 5 full size Quantum Torpedoes strapped to the side of its hull in specially designed non adaptable torpedo housings.
In addition to this extra weaponry, the Starchaser features increased shielding and thicker armor allowing it to sustain more beating than the Jaguar as well as the Holocloack that gave the Jaguar its reputation, allowing it to approach targets undetected. This, combined with the bombers relatively high speed and maneuverability make the craft a highly adaptable combat unit.
However, because the vessel includes some of the Jaguars more advanced technologies as well, its reliability is slightly lower than expected. Also, the lack of any external hard points gives the craft the same problems as the Jaguar and Hammerhead class - lack of versatility. Something which is not characteristic of most other Strike Bombers in service at this time.
Despite these problems though, many Federation outposts make frequent use of the Starchaser class as a compromise between fighters and bombers when resources are in short supply or storage space is limited. However, Starfleet engineers are currently in the process of designing a completely new replacement for it which will feature for more reliable equipment and greater versatility.
ADVANTAGES
• Holo-Stealth Technology provides true stealth capabilities whilst not placing much demand on energy.
• Soliton Wave FTL Propulsion system operates on very low power.
• Weapons loadout is a good compromise between fighter and bomber systems.
• Capable of operating at very long ranges.
• Advanced Sensor Suite for accurate threat-force targeting.
DISADVANTAGES
· Soliton Wave makes the fighter less maneuverable at FTL Speeds and is untested on this size chassis
· Initiation of the Soliton Wave leaves the fighter vulnerable for several seconds.
· Holo-Stealth System is not as effective as a true cloaking device.
· No External Hard points
