Standard Formation Sizes

Below are the formations used in Starfleet, from the smallest at Flotilla to the largest at a Fleet. Before reading on and choseing a formation, there is a standard naming convention.

Each of the abbreviations have an identifier they begin with, most commonly the command ships first three to for initials, ENTSTRGRU or TICOBATGRU. When writing them abbreaviated as above, they are always in caps. The full name would be the ship name then the type of formation, Enterprise Strike Group or Defiance Battle Group.

One final word about simming these formations to their fullest. It's suggested for the smaller formations, FLO-BATGRU, that the command ships department heads act as the formation leads for the various departments. For example, the chief of operations would act as a fleet head of operations just on a much smaller scale. The exec of a formation can be either the exec of the command ship, or another higher ranking CO from the formation.

Now, for the bigger formations, TG and TF, how it works is more open to the commander, though it is highly suggested that if the TG/TF CO is on the ship the ship department heads still act as the formation department heads. At fleet level, a staff is usually put together that stays on the base, or, on occasion, is an officer from a Fleet ship. Withh all the formations, it is very important to use the ships from the formation as regularly as possible. This keeps the realism there and makes it so they don't just 'pop up' all of the sudden.

And now, the formations:

A FLO is the smallest formation of the starship groupings. They are usually comprised of like classes - destroyers, carriers, light cruisers, or escorts. They are usually assigned to a larger group, such as a STRGRU or BATGRU and above but may also operate alone.

A FLO comprised up to 5 ships are able to be commanded by a Captain while 6-9 ships is commanded by a Commodore. A FLO is most commonly used in support of a group or fleet or sent in when a number of ships are needed, but big capital ships would bring to much attention.

10-15 Ships

This is the next largest formation. A STRGRU is composed of one command/capital ship, up to 2 carriers, cruisers, escorts, frigates, and an Hospital ship. This formation can carry up to on Fighter Group which is normally made up of bombers as well as fighters.

The STRGRU should be as balanced as possible to be as versitile as possible. A STRGRU most often operates on it's own under the command of a Commodore. It's role can be one of attack or support to providing medical or disaster assistance.

Due to the versatility of this formation, it is the most common to see in operation.

16-50 Ships
A BATGRU is a formation similar to a STRGRU in that it is put together around a command ship. The main difference is that here, things will start focusing on a certain operating theater. For example, the TCOBATGRU is built around the Malone class carrier Defiance and it was put together to to aid in conflicts.

So, it has mostly ships that were designed for that purpose. Now, that's not to say can't explore as well, as most Starfleet ships carry equipment standard for that.

This formation isn't as common as a STRGRU, but is seen pretty often.

TG

51-100 Ships
A TG is made up of mostly of ships dedicated to defense or attacking a big target. These are usually only used in boarder defense and in the fringes of each quadrant.

They are used mostly where Starfleet needs a strong presence as well. Like with the others, a TG is built around a command ship. Unlike the others, however, a TG may be spread out and broken down into BATGRU or STRGRU's rather then always operating together.

TF

101-500 Ships
A TF is the second largest formation, the first being a Fleet. Normally it is responsable for an entire sector and spread out to provide patrols in usually a BATGRU or STRGRU with the commander on a stattion or planetary base.

When the threat is big enough or a show is needed From Starfleet, the TF can be pulled together with the TF or Sector CO On a command ship, though this ship would be at the center of the force.

In the instances of the fringes of the core quadrants and the largely unexplored Delta and Gamma Quadrants there are instances where a TF Commander is on a command ship due to Starfleet continuously pushing farther into unknown space. In these instances, it is not sound to have the TF CO stationary while the TF moves.

501-1,300 Ships

A Fleet is the top of the line and will usually encompass every ship in a Quadrant. The Fleet is made up of all the other fomations above and is almost always commanded from a starbase or plaetary facility.

The only thing higher then this is Starfleet as a whole, so use of a Fleet is limited to those established by Starfleet directly.

The three current Fleets in operation are Home Fleet - Alpha Quadrant, Beta Fleet - Beta Quadrant, and, the biggest, Exploration Fleet - Delta and Gamma Quadrants.
